Robinson-McNeese, founding pastor of the New Mission Church of God and a medical doctor, was the featured speaker Sunday at the Ministerial Alliance of Springfield and Vicinity’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Service. The event, which drew more than 200 people, was held at Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ, 2401 E. Ash St...

To help educate young students, the Ministerial Alliance sponsored an essay contest. Kids were asked to use a King quote as the basis for an essay. The quote was: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

The Rev. Silas Johnson, pastor of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 2208 Kansas St., is president of the Ministerial Alliance. He said 120 students entered the contest, which was about twice as many as last year.

The winning essays were written by Miracle Drake-Smith, a fifth-grader at Pleasant Plains Middle School, Shyla Liddell, a seventh-grader at Washington Middle School, and Zakiya Hill, a sophomore at Springfield High School.
